What's Happening at United Way?

UWP Heads to D.C. to Talk SNAP

In July, United Way of Pennsylvania, United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley, and United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey headed to Captiol Hill to speak with our PA Senators and Representatives about how the proposed House changes to SNAP would impact thousands of Pennsylvanians.  We are continuing to advocate for the adoption of the bipartisan provisions on SNAP that were adopted by the Senate in the Farm Bill.  The legislation is now going to conference committee for the final details to be worked out.  The House has named the Representatives that will serve on the committee and we are fortuate Representative Glenn Thompson will be apart of the committee.  Now is the time to contact PA's congressional delegation and ask them to protect SNAP!     Please help the United Way network and the Pennsylvanians we serve to take action to encourage our House and Senate members to protect SNAP and adopt the provisions from the bipartisan bill passed in the Senate !

United Way of Pennsylvania Collaborates with Local United Ways to Bring VISTA Team Members to New Projects

United Way of PA has joined the AmeriCorps VISTA program to bring VISTA members to local United Ways. UWP will support two local United Ways, Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way and United Way of Lebanon County, with four VISTA members.

AmeriCorps VISTA members are volunteers who come to a community for at least one year to serve a project that will help people struggling with poverty. VISTA members work to empower communities to find and create sustainable solutions and build community capacity. The projects they work on will help children and families in their communities access resources and lead to better educational outcomes.

Nationwide, VISTA members have mobilized 900,000 volunteers to serve 11 million hours. Three million of the people served by AmeriCorps VISTA are disadvantaged youth. VISTA members are creative, compassionate, and altruistic.

While they are serving, VISTA members also make valuable connections to further their careers and engage in professional development to learn and master new skills. VISTA members are needed in Lebanon, Snyder, Union, and Northumberland counties. UWP is working to assist our local United Ways in their recruiting process, so if you or someone you know is interested in becoming an AmeriCorps VISTA member, please visit www.uwp.org/vista or contact Amanda Barbarich at  [email protected].

United Way of Berks County Fights Hunger with Big Cheese Event

BIG fun and a BIG impact was the result of United Way of Berks County's BIG CHEESE event this past June.

Over 500,000 mac & cheese and rice & bean meals were packaged by 1,000 volunteers over 2 days at United Way of Berks County's BIG CHEESE event to help fight hunger in their community.  Volunteers represented employee teams, volunteers from labor, families and youth sports teams.

Once again, this year's Big Cheese in Berks County was noted as the largest event of its type organized by a United Way, as well as the largest food packing event by any organization in the country's Northeast area. In Berks County, 1 in 5 people are food insecure, or at risk of being food insecure. Meals are distributed through the Weekend Backpack Program and to others in need by the Greater Berks Food Bank and Reading School District.

How United Way Priorities Stack Up in the Race for Governor

The two gubernatorial candidates, Tom Wolf and Scott Wagner, have been selected and now the race is on for the next Governor of Pennsylvania.  So how do they stack up on the issues of importance to United Way?

Both candidates participated in the United Way of Pennsylvania candidate survey so we could learn more about their viewpoints on critical issues impacting Pennsylvanians.  The candidate survey offers Pennsylvanians the opportunity to learn where the two gubernatorial candidates stand on a variety of issues related to education, health, financial stability and the nonprofit sector.

The full survey results are available on the UWP public website on the  2018 Gubernatorial Candidates on the Issues link. The full set of responses has been posted for each candidate. The responses are available in two formats: sorted by issue area, or sorted by candidate.
