UWP 2019-20 legislative public policy survey open
The next legislative session is quickly approaching and UWP is beginning to work on our public policy priorities that we will advocate for in 2019-20.

This year we have developed a survey to get feedback from our members on what policies you believe are most important to the United Way work statewide and which will support the work you are doing in your communities.  In addition, we would like to get some feedback on our current advocacy efforts and how we can better engage with members on public policy.

In order to better serve our members we encourage you to complete this survey on your advocacy wants/needs.  If you have any questions regarding this survey please contact Maggie.

DHS begins reinstating General Assistance

Governor Wolf's administration is planning steps to reinstate the application process for General Assistance (GA) following a court ruling which invalidated the law in which GA was eliminated.

General Assistance, also known as cash assistance, was previously available to low-income individuals who have a temporary or permanent disability, in a drug or alcohol treatment program that prevents them from working, are victims of domestic violence, and other limited circumstances. The benefit was $205 per month for one person, and $316 per month for two people.

Applications will be accepted online through compass, or on paper by application at the County Assistance Office. Department of Human Services staff are still being trained on processes and eligibility for General Assistance.

Meanwhile legislative leaders are questioning how the Governor will pay for this. There was no money appropriated for General Assistance in the 2018-2019 budget, and when the program was in effect, it was costing the state approximately $150 million per year.

U.S. 2020 Census: Planning a Complete Count

The U.S. Census counts every resident in the United States. Article I, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution mandates that this occur every 10 years. The information the Census collects helps determine how more than $675 billion of federal funding is distributed to states and communities each year.

  • Different ways to respond to the U.S. Census
  • Census office locations in PA,
  • How and why to form complete count committees locally
  • Reaching out to low response populations
  • U.S. Census confidentiality
  • Recruiting U.S. Census workers
If you have any questions, or have a topic you would like to see presented in future webinars, please contact Amanda Barbarich via email or call (717) 238-7365 x206.
