What's Happening at United Way?

Celebrate PA 2-1-1 Day!

On Monday, February 11th we are celebrating 2-1-1 Day at UWP!

2-1-1 is the free, confidential, 24-hour information and referral service that connects 97 percent of Pennsylvanians with all the health and human services available to help. Most Pennsylvanians can also text for help by sending their zip code to 898-211. We have built a database with over 33,000 resources available to those in need, which has served over 200,000 Pennsylvanians in 2018 alone. The top needs of contacts with 2-1-1 were utilities assistance, tax assistance, homeless services, rent payment assistance, and food pantries.

2-1-1 has been activated in critical times to respond to various emergency situations facing Pennsylvanians. In summer 2018, PA 2-1-1 partnered with PEMA to handle 208 total disaster relief calls.
  • When the snowstorm hit Erie in December 2017, the PA 2-1-1 Northwest region was called into action. They responded to 1,264 requests for help and were able to screen callers for eligibility for Team Rubicon snow shoveling services.
  • PA 2-1-1 partnered with Butler County EMA to help residents have severe flash flooding. The PA 2-1-1 Southwest region responded to 368 request for vital services, such as mucking out basements, food, shelter, health services and helping families to have hope.
PA 2-1-1 is also working alongside the Eastern Region Continuum of Care to create Connect to Home: Coordinated Entry System of Eastern PA. 2-1-1 is serving as the 24/7 phone access point for people who are homeless or at immediate risk of homelessness.
Coordinated entry is a strategy to connect people to the right services as quickly as possible, prioritize based on need and vulnerability, help a community know all who are experiencing homelessness, and enhance data-driven decision making for planning, resource allocation and performance evaluation. Through this partnership, we have learned valuable information about the housing needs throughout Pennsylvania and were able to reduce 1,111 families in total homelessness across the 33-county region.

United Way of PA and PA 2-1-1 will bring service to 100% of Pennsylvanians in 2019. It is imperative that every Pennsylvanian can access resources to address their human services needs and PA 2-1-1, along with our United Way partners, have worked diligently to bring access statewide. Our reach into every community and our deep relationships allow us to create a safety net that will assist our neighbors in maintaining the fabric of our communities.

Take Action!
Help us take action for PA 2-1-1 In 2018, United Way of Pennsylvania secured a second-time investment of $750,000 from the state to ensure quality standards across the state and help expand the 2-1-1 service  to provide Pennsylvanians the resources needed for health and human services information and referrals. Use our Take Action! platform through the United Way of Pennsylvania website to encourage legislators to support continued funding for 2-1-1. This link is available to anyone, so please pass it on to your friends, family and co-workers, and encourage them to take action to support a 24/7 helpline for Pennsylvanians in need!
