What's Happening at United Way?

Older Americans Month!
This May, United Ways across the commonwealth are celebrating Older Americans Month!
Older Americans face a unique set of challenges regarding health and financial stability. This month, United Way is focusing on helping older Americans overcome these challenges to experience a healthy, fulfilling and positive life.
Several local United Ways are taking action to help the senior members of their community, including:
- United Way of Southwestern PA, who runs Open Your Heart to a Senior, a program which pairs thousands of seniors in the area with trained and compassionate volunteers. Volunteers provide free, non-medical services that help seniors maintain their quality of life and independence in their own home, such as home safety checks, appointment escorts, rides for errands and shopping, home visits, caregiver relief, telephone reassurance and more. OYHS will be attending Rep. Eric Nelson's Senior Expo on May 16th in Delmont, PA. For more information about this event, click here.
- United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley runs the United Way Alliance on Aging, which convenes over 300 seniors and employees at 100 for-profit, non-profit and government entities throughout the Lehigh Valley to ensure seniors stay healthier and have a better quality of life. UWGLV will be attending a discussion about social isolation among older adults on May 14th. To sign up for this discussion and learn more, click here.
- United Way of Bucks County is supporting the Bucks County Opportunity Council's Commodity Supplemental Food Program, which provides free food to seniors. Seniors who are in need of food assistance will receive a box filled with food items including fruits and vegetables, cereal, pasta, milk, beans, and more! - United Way of Bradford County is celebrating Older Americans Month for the fourth year with their "As I Age" wall at Bradford Ecumenical Home. Any passerby is encouraged to participate by stopping at the Wall located by UPB's McDowell Fieldhouse and R.E. McDowell Trail, pick up a piece of chalk, and complete the sentence 'As I Age...'".
United Way of PA is also dedicated to serving seniors across the commonwealth in a number of ways. PA 2-1-1 refers seniors and others in need to agencies and programs that keep them healthy and independent. In 2018, 7,138 seniors age 60-85 in Pennsylvania were provided basic needs assistance through 2-1-1 referrals, keeping them healthy and self-sufficient.
Finally, United Way of PA will be releasing a data-set called the ALICE® report which stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed. This report focuses on Pennsylvanians who go to work every day but still cannot afford their basic needs. Although this report focuses on people of all ages, you may be surprised at how many seniors are members of the ALICE population. Be on the lookout for the public launch of the ALICE report on June 18th!
We need our strong network of advocates to help us advocate for the common good! Please take action to encourage your local legislators to support policies important to United Way's mission! United Way of Pennsylvania (UWP) is a state association representing our 48 member United Ways and United Funds across the Commonwealth.
UWP's mission is to assist and champion the efforts of local United Ways in advancing the common good.
Primarily UWP's work consists of government relations work on the policy issues affecting PA's communities in the areas of health, education, and financial stability. In addition, UWP works with our local United Way members to support their efforts and offer support to their mission.
