Community Action Committee of the Lehigh Valley will be providing a full training course to United Way of PA members. There are 5 different cohorts. To participate in Cohort 3, please register by the end of business August 10th.

Cost

This training costs $100 per person. United Way of PA is also submitting this training for flex credit approval, which means if our agenda is approved local United Ways will be able to be reimbursed for at least part of the training cost. We will communicate this information as soon as we are certain of it.

Length

This training will run on a cohort model. Each cohort will contain 50-75 members and will run for at least four weeks. Each session will last approximately two hours for a total of eight hours minimum. Cohorts may choose to add an additional session if it is needed. We prefer all staff/volunteers from one United Way attend the same cohort, but can be flexible to allow for scheduling.

  • September 7th 1:00pm-3:00pm
  • September 14th 1:00pm-3:00pm
  • September 21st 1:00pm-3:00pm (Extra session as needed)

  • Cultural Awareness and Diversity: Demystifying What Cultural Humility Means
    • Importance of being culturally humble, sensitive, what that means and how we can be allies/co-conspirators with people of color
  • Our Social Identity
    • How our social identity influences how we connect, engage and interact with people that we see as “different” from us
  • How Stereotypes Affect Our Perception of Others
    • How society/media/culture influences the way we perceive and see others as well as how we treat them
  • Understanding White Privilege
    • Impact of race and institutional racism, day-to-day policies and practices that affect people of color; how white privilege impacts our daily interactions with people of color
  • Cognitive Dissonance
    • How dissonance can affect our perception of the experiences of people of color
  • How Implicit Bias Can Affect How We Engage and See People of Color
    • Understanding what implicit bias is, where it comes from and how it affects us and the way we navigate relationships or lack of relationships, with people of color
  • Macro/micro aggressions
    • How our biases influence our behaviors and actions toward people we see as “different” from us

Learning Objectives

  • The importance of having a culturally responsive/sensitive mindset when working with and interacting with people of color
  • How having a culturally responsive mindset will help us engage people of color in our daily lives and in the workplace
  • How the stereotypes we hold can affect our view of people of color and hinder building relationships 
  • How society’s portrayal of people of color can assist in our perception of other cultures/ethnicities
  • How leaning into concepts, ideals and beliefs that are different from what society has taught us, can help us all be better humans and live more enriched lives.

    • Yes. Not only does it meet the minimum necessary UWW requirements for staff and board members, it exceeds them to bring your United Way staff and volunteers the tools and education to begin to take a leading role in guiding our communities toward equality
