Jan. 31 is Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Awareness Day!

January 31st is EITC Awareness Day! Spread awareness of the Earned Income Tax Credit that will bring thousands in tax credits to hardworking Pennsylvanians this year.

EITC is a common-sense tax break that helps low wage income earners, like our ALICE community, keep more of what they’ve earned. Last year, 865 thousand Pennsylvanians claimed EITC, pumping $2 billion back into Pennsylvania’s economy.

EITC, along with the Child Tax Credit (CTC) have lifted 7.8 million American’s out of poverty in 2018. Research supports these tax credits as being beneficial to the reduction of poverty, encouraging a growing workforce, and expanding long term gains in child health and education.

United Ways across the country are advocating to expand EITC to those being taxed into poverty. Currently, low-income working Americans not raising children at home are little to not at all eligible for EITC. Young people age 21-24 are entirely blocked from this pro-work, anti-poverty tool. The effect of this exclusion is that millions of Americans are taxed into poverty every year. United Ways want to change this!
