United Way of Pennsylvania (UWP) partnered with the Pennsylvania Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Bureau to identify and return unclaimed property belonging to local United Ways across the Commonwealth. Through the partnership, more than 75 items of unclaimed property were identified and matched to local United Ways, resulting in $28,337.02 being returned to the network. 

Each year, the Pennsylvania Treasury receives hundreds of millions of dollars in unclaimed property. These funds can become unclaimed for many reasons, including outdated mailing addresses, misspelled names, organizational mergers, or name changes. Working together, UWP and the Treasury reviewed claim information, identified the appropriate local United Ways, and filed a group claim on behalf of the network to simplify the process. 

Those recovered dollars are now back where they belong, supporting local United Ways as they strengthen communities, invest in programs, and help Pennsylvanians build healthier, more financially secure futures. 

“I’m happy to return more than $28,000 to the United Way of Pennsylvania so these funds can support the organization’s important work serving communities across our Commonwealth,” Treasurer Stacy Garrity said. 

Treasurer Garrity recently presented a check for $28,337.02 to United Way of Pennsylvania President Kristen Rotz. 

“We’re grateful to partner with the Pennsylvania Treasury to help return these dollars to the local United Ways they belong to,” said Kristen Rotz, President of United Way of Pennsylvania. “Every dollar recovered is another dollar that can be reinvested into strengthening communities, supporting ALICE families, and helping people access the resources and opportunities they need to thrive. Treasury makes searching and filing a claim easy for both individuals and nonprofits, and their team is there to help every step of the way.” 

This marks the second successful partnership between United Way of Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Treasury. In 2023, more than $160,000 in unclaimed property was returned to local United Ways across the state.

This effort also serves as a reminder for individuals and organizations to search for unclaimed property of their own. According to the Pennsylvania Treasury, 1 in 10 Pennsylvanians has unclaimed property waiting to be claimed.
