Our Programs
READING BUDDIES is a unique volunteer-driven early literacy initiative that virtually connects mentors to students in first grade who need extra help. Students receive individual attention along with access to free books. The program is designed to improve students’ fundamental building blocks of early literacy.
MANY CHILDREN IN POVERTY do not live in literacy-rich environments. Spending time and sharing books with role models allows these children to connect with the world of reading in a new and special way. Reading Buddies volunteers see the importance of early education first-hand.

SEE TO SUCCEED has a simple yet transformative purpose — giving students the gift of sight. A pair of eyeglasses can change lives and improve academic outcomes.
RESEARCH HAS SHOWN that having limited access to clothes or laundry facilities can cause children to be bullied and not want to attend school. Some families may even rotate clothing items among siblings because they do not have extra resources at home. That’s why United Way of Wyoming Valley launched the Loads of Love initiative.
In participating schools, students in need are identified by a trusted teacher, administrator or school nurse to get connected to onsite laundry facilities and detergent to provide a discreet solution to the challenge of having clean clothes.
